What separates wall-to-wall from every other flooring is that the room’s imperfections cannot hide under a rug’s border. Walls are never quite straight, corners are never quite square, and radiators, floor vents, stair nosings and closet returns all interrupt the field. Proper technique – accurate rough cuts, patient trimming, firm tucking into the gully at the baseboard, clean work around every obstacle – is what makes a carpet look like it grew in the room. It is slower than approximate work by an hour or two, and it is visible for fifteen years.

What Makes Wall-to-Wall Different

Wall-to-wall (broadloom) carpet comes in wide rolls and is cut, seamed where needed, and stretched to fit the exact dimensions of the room, edge to edge. Compared to carpet tile, it gives a more uniform, higher-end appearance with fewer visible seams – the trade-off is that spot-repair or replacement, if ever needed, involves the affected section rather than a single swappable tile.

Choosing Carpet Grade and Pile

Plush and frieze styles suit lower-traffic, comfort-focused rooms; loop pile and Berber-style carpets hold up better in higher-traffic areas like hallways and stairs. We'll talk through pile type and face weight based on where the carpet is going, not just what looks best in a sample.

Planning Seams Before the First Cut

Broadloom comes in rolls, typically twelve feet wide, so any room wider than the roll needs a seam – and seam placement is a plan, not an accident. Good practice puts seams perpendicular to the main light source, away from doorways and pivot points, and out of the natural sightline from the room's entrance. Pile direction has to run consistently across seamed pieces or the two sides will forever read as slightly different colours. We draw the seam plan at the measure and show you where every join will land before you approve the quote.

Stretch-In or Glue-Down

Residential wall-to-wall is usually a stretch-in install – tackless strip at the walls, pad in the field, carpet power-stretched drum-tight across the room. It feels softer, insulates better, and makes future replacement simpler. Direct glue-down, common in commercial settings and some condos, bonds the carpet straight to the subfloor: flatter underfoot, no re-stretching ever, and better for rolling loads, at the cost of cushion. Double-glue systems split the difference with a bonded pad. The room's use decides the method, and we will tell you which one your space actually wants.

Broadloom Through a Whole Floor

Running one carpet through a hallway and its bedrooms is the classic broadloom move: no transitions underfoot, one continuous tone that makes a compact second storey feel larger, and doorway joins hidden under closed doors where they belong. It also simplifies future care – one product, one cleaning approach, one attic remnant that matches every room. We measure whole-floor jobs as a single layout to minimize seams and waste across the plan, which is something a room-by-room quote cannot do.

Keeping Wall-to-Wall Looking New

Broadloom asks little: regular vacuuming along traffic lanes, prompt spill response, a professional hot-water extraction clean every year or two, and furniture coasters under sharp feet. Rotating furniture occasionally redistributes wear in rooms with fixed walk paths. Hard flooring has taken over main floors, which makes the case for broadloom sharper where it remains: bedrooms, upper hallways, stairs, family rooms, basements and home theatres – anywhere warmth, quiet and comfort underfoot are the actual point of the room. Wall-to-wall deadens sound within a room and between floors better than any rug over hardwood, feels warmer in a Toronto February, and costs meaningfully less per square foot than most hard-flooring alternatives. It is not nostalgia; for the rooms it suits, it is simply the better tool.
