Why Choose Us for Re-Stretching

What every job includes.

Proper power-stretcher technique

Not a quick fix that comes loose again.

Tackless strip checked and repaired

If needed, not just the carpet re-laid over a damaged strip.

Most jobs completed in a single visit

A smaller job than a full replacement.

Honest assessment

If the carpet is worn enough that replacement makes more sense.

Why Carpet Comes Loose

Foot Traffic & Furniture Weight

Carpet naturally stretches slightly over time under everyday use.

Seasonal Humidity Changes

Can loosen carpet from the tackless strip independent of age.

A Real Trip Hazard

Loose or rippling carpet gets worse rather than better on its own.

Carpet Experts Toronto provides professional carpet stretching & re-stretching throughout Toronto and the surrounding GTA.

Why Re-Stretching, Not Replacement

Rippling or loose carpet that's otherwise in reasonable condition doesn't need to be replaced, it needs to be pulled back tight. Re-stretching uses a power stretcher to pull the carpet taut from wall to wall and re-secure it to the tackless strip, which is a fundamentally different and more effective technique than simply pressing loose carpet back into place, which rarely holds for long.

Power-Stretching Loose Carpet Back Into Place

We assess where the carpet has come loose and whether the tackless strip itself needs any repair, then use a power stretcher to pull the carpet tight from one side of the room to the other and re-secure it at the edges. Most re-stretching jobs are completed in a single visit and don't require removing or replacing the carpet itself.

The Signs Your Carpet Needs a Re-Stretch

Ripples or waves that appear across the middle of a room. Carpet that has pulled away from the baseboard or lifts at a doorway. A wrinkle that walks around the room over months, showing up in a new place each season. Bunching where furniture used to sit. All of these mean the carpet is no longer under tension – and none of them fix themselves. A ripple that gets walked on folds over on itself, creasing the backing, and a crease is permanent in a way a ripple is not. Earlier is cheaper with this repair.

Why Carpet Loosens in the First Place

Carpet stretches for reasons that have nothing to do with quality: years of foot traffic gradually relax the backing, humidity swings expand and contract it season after season, heavy furniture dragged across the pile shoves slack toward the walls, and steam cleaning can temporarily loosen an already-marginal stretch. Sometimes the original install was knee-kicked rather than power-stretched, and the carpet was never truly tight to begin with – common in builder-grade installs. Whatever the cause, the remedy is the same, and it does not require new carpet.

What a Re-Stretch Visit Looks Like

Furniture in the affected room is shifted as needed, the carpet is released at the edges closest to the slack, and the power stretcher does the real work – bracing against one wall and driving tension across the full span of the room, something no knee kicker can replicate. Excess carpet is trimmed, the edge is re-hooked onto the tackless strip and tucked, and any strip that has failed is replaced along the way. Most rooms take an hour or two; most visits cover the whole problem in one appointment, furniture back in place before we leave.

Re-Stretching Stairs and Hallways

Loose carpet on stairs is its own category – a slipping tread surface is a safety issue, not a cosmetic one, and it gets priority scheduling. Hallways ripple more than rooms because their traffic is concentrated into a narrow lane; they also respond beautifully to a proper re-stretch. Both are typically quick visits, and both are worth doing at the first sign of movement rather than after the fold has set.

When Re-Stretching Is Not the Answer

We will tell you at the door if your carpet is past helping: backing that has delaminated from the pile, seams that have burst rather than loosened, pad gone flat, or carpet so worn the re-stretch would tighten a floor you still will not like. In those cases the honest advice is replacement, and the visit becomes a free quote instead. Either way you get a straight answer. Call (365) 517-1861, describe what the carpet is doing, and we can usually tell you over the phone which visit to book.

A Small Job We Treat Like a Real One

Re-stretching is modest work by flooring standards, and some installers only take it grudgingly between installs. We book it properly: a confirmed window, a crew with a power stretcher rather than just a knee kicker, and the same standard of edge and tuck work a new install gets. It is also frequently how homeowners meet us – a one-hour repair done well this year tends to become a whole-home replacement conversation a few years later, and we are content to earn it in that order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why has my carpet gone loose even though it's not that old?

Carpet can loosen from the tackless strip due to foot traffic, furniture weight, or humidity changes, independent of how old it is.

Is re-stretching cheaper than replacing the carpet?

In most cases, yes – re-stretching addresses the tackless-strip attachment, not the carpet material itself, so it's a smaller job than a full replacement.

Can all loose carpet be re-stretched, or is replacement sometimes necessary?

Most loose or rippling carpet can be re-stretched if the carpet material itself is still in reasonable shape. We'll tell you honestly if your carpet is too worn for re-stretching to be worthwhile.
