Measuring and Tacking Stair Carpet, Tread by Tread

Stairs are measured tread by tread, since treads and risers are rarely perfectly uniform even in newer homes. Tackless strip is installed at the base of each riser and back of each tread, and carpet is either fitted as continuous pieces down the run or cut and tacked individually per step, depending on the staircase and carpet type.

Loose or lifting stair carpet is a genuine trip hazard, more so than loose carpet in an open room. Proper tackless-strip installation and tight tacking at the nosing is what keeps stair carpet secure under daily use, not just on the day it's installed.

Waterfall or Hollywood: Two Finishes, Two Looks

There are two classic ways to carpet a step. A waterfall finish flows the carpet over the nosing and straight down to the next tread in one continuous line – faster, slightly more material-forgiving, and the traditional look for full-coverage stairs. A Hollywood (cap-and-band) finish wraps the carpet tightly around the nosing and tucks it under, tracing the stair's profile – crisper, more tailored, and the better frame for runners and patterned carpet. The choice is aesthetic, but it changes the labour and the material cut, so we settle it at the quote, with photos if you want to see the difference on real staircases.

Carpet That Can Take the Stairs

Stairs concentrate an entire household's traffic onto a few square metres, and the carpet bends over every nosing besides. That rules out delicate deep piles and argues for dense, low-to-medium pile heights – tight cut piles, hard-wearing twists, and quality loop constructions all perform well. Density matters more than thickness here, and a patterned or flecked product hides the walk line that develops on any staircase. If the connecting hallway is being carpeted too, we plan the two together so the transition at the top step is seamless.

Winders, Landings, Curves and Open Sides

Straight runs are the easy case. Toronto houses supply plenty of the other kind: pie-shaped winder steps that turn a corner, mid-run landings, curved flights, bullnose bottom steps, and open-sided staircases that need a finished edge on the exposed side. Each has a correct technique – winders are cut individually so the pile direction stays consistent through the turn, open sides are bound or wrapped rather than left raw. This is handwork, it is exactly where cheap stair jobs go wrong, and it is work we enjoy doing properly.

Stair carpet ages faster than the rooms it connects, and stairs are often the first place a house shows its years – flattened nosings, fraying edges, a shiny walk line up the middle. Because stairs are priced per step, replacing just the staircase is an affordable, contained project that sharply changes how a hallway reads. Out with the old carpet, a check of every tread and the tackless strip, and a new carpet tacked tight – most staircases are done in a day.

Grip Underfoot for Every Age in the House

Carpeted stairs are more forgiving than bare wood under socked feet, small children and older knees alike – more traction going up, more mercy coming down. That safety only holds if the installation is tight: a loose fold on a stair is worse than bare wood. Proper tackless work at every step and firm tension at every nosing is the entire game.
